私は普段から「世界一のチャートマニア」になるべく（？）、音楽の各種ランキングに目を通しています。
そこで、最近気になっているのはSpotifyとApple Musicの違いについてです。おおまかに２点の違いを述べると、アメリカではApple Musicが2016年にDrakeとFrank Oceanなどの独占配信を行い、登録者を集めたという経緯からApple MusicはR&B/Hip-Hopリスナーにユーザーが傾いており、ランキング上位はそれらが占める傾向にあります。
さらに、最近別の違いも発見しました。毎週、新曲リリース日の金曜日の各種ランキングをいつもチェックしているのですが、そこで気になったのはSpotify・Apple Musicでの「クリスマス曲の人気の度合いが違う」ということです。
直近の調査 (12/22) では、なんとSpotifyでは51曲がランクインしているのに対し、なんとApple Musicはわずか４曲のみ！（いずれも200位までカウント）ここまで違うとは面白い事象なのでは？と思い、少し踏み込んで調査してみようと思いました。
まず、そもそもクリスマス曲の中で何が人気なのか？という所から調査してみようと思います。調査に用いるのは、12/25デイリーのSpotify全世界再生数ランキングです。その中からクリスマス曲を抜き出しました。

計102曲がランキングに！つまり、Spotifyランキングの過半数をクリスマス曲が占めるということに！
Spotifyのアプリのホーム画面には「グローバル トップ50」がプリセットで入っており（当時）、そこから聞く曲を探す人もいるようなので、ランキング上位に入ることはかなりの「宣伝」にもなるというのですが、12/25は50位のうち32曲がクリスマス曲なので、「クリスマス曲を聴こうかなー」と思わずにSpotifyを開いた人をもクリスマス曲に巻き込んでいる、という可能性もあります。
ここで注目すべき点は３つあると思います。まずは、クリスマスの人気曲は定番曲ということです。
Spotifyなどのストリーミングサービスの持ち味の一つとして、「新しい曲をすぐに聴ける」という点があると思います。その持ち味を活かすべく、ユーザーは毎週新リリースの曲にすぐ飛びつきます。そして新曲がリリースされる金曜日は多くの新曲がランキングに登場します。（そこがピークになる曲もある）その新リリースの曲の中で、人気をキープした曲が上位に残る、という傾向があり最初の週からずっと上位を走る曲もよくあります。
しかし、Spotify新しい曲一辺倒というわけでもないです。プレイリスト文化が栄えているSpotifyは過去曲にも目が配られるケースもあります。例えば、2004年にリリースされたThe Killers*1のMr.Brightsideは現在もイギリスのSpotify では未だに65位をキープ。このストリーミングの成績が生きてリリースから10年以上が経過しながらも、シングルチャートにも入っていました。また、Spotifyのサービス開始前にリリースされていたEminemの曲がアメリカのSpotify 200位圏内を頻繁に出入りする、などの事例もあります。
このようにSpotifyのランキングは「新しい曲の人気にすぐ火がつく傾向があるが、過去曲へも注目が集められる」という特徴があります。
今回のクリスマスでランクインしたのは、近年組（Michael Buble・Ariana Grande・Justin Bieber）などもいるものの、上位に入っているのは多くが2000年よりも前の曲。つまり、クリスマスはSpotifyにとって普段から持つ「過去の曲への注目」という特性を最大化したイベントであるとも言えます。
次は、規模が拡大しているという点です。12/24・12/25の首位はいずれもMariah CareyのAll I Want For Christmas Is Youだったのですが、それぞれの日の再生数は約807万 → 約647万と推移しています。
クリスマスのムードが終わった翌日・12/26はPost Maloneのrockstarが首位に舞い戻ります。再生数は"All I Want For～"と比べると少なめ(約386万)です。"rockstar"はクリスマス期もこの数値と同程度の再生数を記録していたものの、多くのクリスマス曲に再生数が「相対的」に見劣りして、「順位」では再生数首位に立てなかったものの、「数値」的にはSpotifyで１位を取れる規模の再生数をずっとキープしていたのです。
またクリスマス時の200位（ランキング最下位）の再生数が12/24は約68万、12/25は約61万でしたが、12/26は約47万まで減少。つまり、全体的に再生数の規模が上がっていた、ということが伺えます。
これらの点から、クリスマス曲たちは、現在ヒット中の曲を「駆逐」したのではなく、「両立」し、Spotifyの規模を大きく押し上げている、ということが読み取れます。
そして最後の注目点はこのクリスマス期に向けて、Spotifyが独自の曲を追加したという点です。103位のMiley Cyrusの曲名に注目してください。曲名はRockin' Around The Christmas Tree - Recorded at Spotify Studios NYCとあります。 "Recorded at Spotify Studios"、つまりこれはSpotify用の独自の音源なのです！クリスマスのためにMiley Cyrusのような名のしれたシンガーを呼んでオリジナル音源を作成しているのです。ほかにも158位のSam Smithもこれに当てはまります。他にも複数アーティストが複数このような試みをしており、Spotifyがクリスマスに力を入れていることがわかります。
まとめると、クリスマスはストリーミングサービス、特にSpotifyにとって独自の強みを活かしやすい「書き入れ時」ということが伺えます。

何が人気か？も微妙に違いますね。

なんと38曲にまで減少！ここまで露骨に違いが出るものなのですね。トップ10に入っているのはAll I Want For Christmas Is Youのみで、ほかのトップ10曲はQuavo・Travis Scottのジョイントアルバムからの曲が多くを占めていました。
ここまで差がついたことの理由については二つ考えられます。まず、クリスマス・アンセムの多くは歌い上げるような曲が多く、Hip-Hopリスナーの興味が引けない可能性があるということ。クリスマス曲の多くは「アダルトポップ」のようなジャンルに分類されています。ただ、Run DMCのChristmas in Hollisなど一部ヒップホップ系のクリスマス曲もあります。（ここには入っていないですが）
そして、Apple Musicがそこまでクリスマスに敏感ではないという可能性です。Apple Musicはアプリを立ち上げると、まずは自分が保存（または追加）した曲が表示されます。Apple Musicは、Spotifyよりも「どのような曲を聞けばよいか？」のような導線が少なく、常に能動的な検索が求められます。ホーム画面にランキングが表示されるSpotifyに対してApple Musicはランキングに到達するためには２回、画面を動かす必要があります。
ここまでストリーミングサービスごとに違いが出るとは意外でした。続いて日本を調査します。

登場したのは93曲。わずかに過半数に届かず。とはいえ多いことには変わらず。27位のクリスマスイブRapなど、一部日本独自のアンセムも順位を伸ばしています。
SpotifyはApple Musicと比べて、邦楽の対応曲数が少ないため現在(12/28)トップ10には２位の打上花火のほか、６位にWherever You Are (2010年リリース・2016年CMに起用され注目)、７位にMy Boo (2016年リリース)、10位には愛をこめて花束を (2010年リリース)がエントリーするなど、日頃から独自に「過去曲を発掘」しているようです。
現在では対応曲数の差は小さくなってきましたが、その後「愛唄」(2007年)や「ワタリドリ」(2015年)などがSpotifyの再生数トップ10入り（日本で）するなど、「J-Pop過去曲を発掘」という文化は続いているようです。
クリスマス時も電気グルーヴ、くるり、クボケンジ、天才バンド、The HotpantzなどApple Musicでは入らなかった独自の面々を「発掘」しています。

ここでのエントリーは64曲。日本でも、クリスマス曲はSpotify > Apple Musicという結果に。特徴的だったのは、クリスマスのコンピレーションがアルバムランキングの首位に躍り出ていたこと。そこに入っている曲が基本的に強かった印象があります。
クリスマス曲の中でも定番や、比較的知名度のあるアーティストが名を連ねていており、Spotifyのような「発掘力」はやや欠けていることが伺えます。
これで、アメリカ・日本と共にクリスマス曲はSpotify のほうが人気、という結果が出ました。ほかイギリスでも調査したところ、Spotifyで160曲、Apple Musicで138曲となり再び同じ結果となりました。
他の国でも調査してみようとも思ったのですが、Apple Musicのランキングは遡って閲覧することは不可能なので、今となってはもう調べようが無かったです。これは来年に向けての課題ですね。
今回はクリスマス曲を事例に、ストリーミングとの関係性・サービスごとの違いを調査しました。その結果、クリスマス曲との相性はSpotify > Apple Musicということがわかりました。
このようにストリーミングサービスごとの違いを調べ、何がヒットするのか？などを予測してみると新しい発見があると思います。今後も詳しく調べてみたい分野だと思っています。
